What kind of fabric sunscreen better?

The sun is still going on. How to protect the sun is still a headache. In the face of a wide range of sunscreen clothing on the market, consumers are still very tangled: how effective is the effect of sunscreen? Online there are rumors, the sunscreen sold on the market than ordinary clothing sunscreen, really is it?

In response to these questions, the author started a survey of the truth.

Survey first step: experimental sampling

The author searched for sun protection clothing on the Taobao shop and jumped out of 220,000 pieces of baby. The average price was around tens of dollars. I bought a "Junjun" brand of genuine UV protection sunscreen, known as "has been quality inspection", monthly sales of 130,000, I chose a piece of phosphor, promotional price of 24 yuan. Randomly in a small commodity market in Hangzhou, the author found a similar material of sun protection clothing, selected a blue, priced at 40 yuan.

Then, the author came to a number of fashion and outdoor brands in the store, the price of these "sun clothes" is much more expensive than the Internet, priced at 200 yuan to 600 yuan. The author found a gray T-shirt labelled "UPF 50" at the "NORTH FACE" (north) counter of a department store. The price was 228 yuan.

At the same time, the author also purchased a black and white two-piece cotton T-shirt as a sample representing "general clothes." Came to the Zhejiang Textile Testing and Research Institute for testing.

The second step of the investigation: the experimental process

First, five garments were placed in a constant temperature and humidity environment at a temperature of 20° and a humidity of 65% for 24 hours. "Because the temperature will cause the object to expand and contract, humidity affects the weight of the object. To avoid errors, these conditions must be controlled." Textile Industry Technical Inspection Department Yan Gong explained.

Next, samples were taken and 9 samples were cut out on the back, hands, and front of each garment. Because the sampling standards are strictly stipulated, it is necessary to randomly sample more than four sites during the test. Each part of the random sampling must meet the national standard, so that the product is considered to pass.

Finally, these samples were placed on a UV tester and the instrument gave the test results.

Experts explained to the author that ultraviolet rays are divided into three bands. UV rays that cause human skin tanning are UVA (radiation waves with a wavelength of 320 to 420 nm, commonly known as long waves). UVA can reach the dermis of the skin and destroy elastic fibers and collagen. Protein fibers that will tanning our skin. Therefore, the first thing to compare is the so-called sun-protective clothing and ordinary clothing, which has good UVA-band UV protection.

The third step: experimental results

After testing, the results are as follows: The anti-ultraviolet effects of ordinary black and white T-shirts are even more obvious than the two that reporters bought from online and small shopping malls. That is, known as sun protection clothing, no ordinary clothes more sunscreen.

The brand store's sun protection suits are clearly marked with their own sun protection rating. After the experiment, the UV protection effect of this gray sunscreen T-shirt on the north was actually reduced by two ordinary T-shirts.

UPF analysis, test results: Two sunscreen jackets purchased from online and small commodity markets, UPF were only 3, far lower than the standard value of UV protection products (>40), and the author bought two random black and white T-shirts The UPF value is 50+; far higher than the first three.

The test results are very clear, no matter what brand of sun protection clothing for this test, there is no more sunscreen than the ordinary T-shirt as a contrast.

In addition, the test results of branded sun protection suits differed from their own UPF values: “Northern” brand sunscreen shirts were marked with a UPF rating of 50 while the actual test results were only 41.

UV protection products are not casually called

Then, does the country have corresponding standards and regulations for the sun protection performance of “sun protection clothing”?
Yan Gong introduced that the State has a standard for GB/T 18830-2009 “Evaluation of UV Protection Properties of Textiles” for textiles. Only the ultraviolet protection coefficient value of textiles, that is UPF is greater than 40, and the transmittance of UVA is less than 5 When it is %, it can be called "UV protection product".
However, this GB/T is a recommendation and is not a national mandatory standard. However, if an enterprise labels this product on the product, it will accept and adopt this standard on behalf of the enterprise. The "North" brand sunscreen shirt, UPF marked 50, while the actual test results only 41. Although theoretically meeting the requirements of UV protection products, there is suspicion of exaggerating efficacy.
