Scientists develop thin and light nano aluminum plates that can float in the Martian atmosphere

In addition to Mars helicopters, scientists have not given up research on more Mars vehicles, such as the thin and light aluminum oxide plate being developed by the University of Pennsylvania. Although most of the interior is hollow, the tiny gap channels form a corrugated paper-like reinforcement structure. While improving the bending stiffness, it can also prevent the propagation of cracks. Even better, it can still fly.

When exposed to strong light, the heated top surface may form a temperature difference with the bottom, guiding gas to be sucked from the top of the opening of each channel and then discharged from the bottom, forming a suspension effect similar to an air cushion.

Although Mars' atmosphere is very thin and weak in gravity, each "nano-flying plate" weighs only one fruit fly, and can theoretically carry a payload that is ten times its own weight.

Even so, its load capacity is still quite limited, so scientists are still studying small chemical sensors that can be mounted on the fly board.

Indoor measurements that simulate the Martian atmosphere can hold a silicon ring.

In terms of handling, we can imagine the use of a rover to achieve near-field tracking and adjustment. For example, it can be steered by selectively irradiating different areas of the board surface, or by multiple independently controllable lasers to drive the entire flight formation.

Details of this study have been published by Assistant Professor Igor Bargatin in the recently published Advanced Materials journal.
