Low-cost, easy-to-use robotic device can quickly check pipe leaks
Leakage has always been a difficult problem to solve in the global water distribution system. According to rough statistics, about 20% of losses in the water distribution system will be caused by water leakage. At the same time, leakage of pipelines will also cause damage to relevant infrastructure facilities. The reason why this problem is difficult to solve is because the water distribution system is complex and huge. Today's accurate water leakage detection system is still expensive and slow. MIT Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a low-cost, simple robotic device that can quickly and accurately discover the designated water distribution system. The leaks, even if they are small, can be detected and repaired before they are catastrophic.
The low-cost robotic device was led by Professor Kamal Youcef-Toumi of MIT for nine years of development and testing. The prototype will be demonstrated live at the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems at the IROS Conference in September next year. The shell is basically made of rubber. The first half is like a soft body robot in the upper part of the bottle. The second half is a "skirt" sensor. After the robot device enters the water distribution system, it can move passively, recording its position parameters and sensing it in real time. The various vibrations and pressures are analyzed by the algorithm to identify the specific location of the leak. Prof. Kamal Youcef-Toumi once tested in Saudi Arabia and found a leakage hole that caused one gallon per minute through the device. He also found that the average lower limit of leakage hole diameters that can be detected by other detection methods is one-tenth smaller. Subtle leaks.
The team is now planning to create a more flexible and scalable version of the robot that can adaptively detect leaks in pipes of different diameters.
