The global surveillance market is growing rapidly. In the industrial and commercial fields, high-definition cameras and video compression technologies have played an unprecedented role in the transition from traditional analog systems to digital systems.

Monitoring systems typically use software and general-purpose CPUs for video processing. This approach is practical for higher-cost applications, but to meet the trend of higher resolution and lower costs, advanced digital video technology must be integrated into application-oriented integrated circuits to reduce costs, improve performance, and Use the current higher resolution, more cost-effective CMOS sensors to create the conditions. This makes image signal processor (ISP) and video compression technology more and more important for implementing surveillance systems.

IMS Research expects that the total global CCTV and video surveillance equipment market will exceed US$14 billion in 2014, and the global network (Internet Protocol Digital) surveillance camera market will reach 7 million each year. Of all network surveillance cameras shipped in 2014, nearly 60% of the cameras will be high definition cameras with a resolution of 1.3 million pixels or more.

Analog surveillance cameras and systems (Figure 1) dominate the current commercial market, but these cameras have inherent flaws that can be solved with digital video compression and ISP technology. For example, the large size of the analog camera system makes it difficult to achieve a secret installation because it requires complex dedicated point-to-point coaxial cables that are connected to the recording equipment together with the power supply. In addition, analog cameras provide poor image quality. This technique is not scalable and cannot be used with higher resolution digital CMOS sensors.
