Spanish scientists use magnetic poles to boost fullerene-based solar cells

According to scientists, this organic material can further increase the efficiency of the solar cell itself by controlling the direction of the spin, thereby allowing it to generate more current.

Research coordinator Luis Hueso explained that the device is a simple PV cell made from fullerene C60 with cobalt and nickel magnetic poles. Hueso added: "The rotation of normal solar cells is "out of order", but due to magnetism, we managed to change them so that we could collect more current. The research team said that using electrodes can increase the photovoltaic efficiency of the device by 14%. .

Another advantage of this device is its ability to directly generate alternating current (AC). This may lead to more cost-effective solar cells because no transformers or inverters are needed to convert direct current (DC) to alternating current.

However, the researchers also admitted that although they can show how magnetic poles improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cells, they are still far from finding the best solar cells.

The research was conducted by Ikerbasque in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max Planck Institute in Germany.
