Japan Showa Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd. formulated the "Interim Operational Action Plan for 2013-2017". Among them, for its subsidiary Solar Frontier's solar cell business, the company has made a declaration of “building a foundation in Japan, and relying on its technical strength and sales capabilities to reach the world stage†(the company’s representative director Masaaki Shinkai). At the same time, it also announced that the company is currently developing the basic components of solar cells - the new CIS solar module.
Showa Shell's solar cell business in Japan has not been around for a long time, but this time the representative of the company’s board of directors, Shigeru Fujimori, said with confidence that “it will be used in megawatt solar power plants, industrial applications, and residential roof applications. We expand our business in the field. Our modules are excellent in terms of cost, quality, and power generation, and have the strength to compete with Japanese and foreign solar cell manufacturers." Although the solar cell business has been losing money before, it has "made money from the second half of 2012. It will start generating revenue in 2013" (Arai).
To seize the offensive against the Japanese market, Showa Shell will reduce module production costs by reducing raw material costs and technological innovation. Specifically, the existing CIS solar cell module will be improved at Guofu Factory (Miyazaki Prefecture), and the production cost will be reduced to about half of that in December 2012 by 2017.
Moreover, if the “new module†that is being developed at the Atsugi City Institute can be realized, the cost may be lower than the target cost of 2017 announced by a large Chinese manufacturer. If the new module can be developed in 2017, the production cost will be 70% lower than that in December 2012.
Although Showa Shell Petroleum did not disclose the details of the new module, it said that unlike existing modules, the use of flexible substrates is under study. The company also hopes to circumvent price competition by giving it new features.
Showa Shell Petroleum will use its production costs lower than existing modules and new modules as its weapon to enter overseas markets in the medium term. At that time, the construction of overseas factories will also be considered after the establishment of a parent factory in Japan and technical verification.
