Japanese air magnesium battery: energy density up to 10 times that of lithium battery

On September 1st, Japan reported that it is promoting the large-capacity study of air magnesium batteries, which work by generating a chemical reaction through the chemical reaction of oxygen and magnesium in the air. The participating institutions include 11 units of industrial, academic, and government departments such as Furukawa Battery, Nikon, Nissan Motor, Tohoku University, and Miyagi Prefecture.

As a research step, Furukawa Battery plans to produce an emergency power source with a starting capacity of 300 watts during the year to charge mobile phones. In addition, we will develop a power supply that can support household electricity with a power generation capacity of 3 kW in five years, and build a power generation system that can be used as a small power plant of 1,000 kilowatts in 10 years.

Furukawa Battery will develop a recycling system for power generation devices and devices at the same time. The power generation device developed by Furukawa Battery is an air battery with a positive electrode of oxygen and a negative electrode of magnesium metal. The positive electrode manufacturing process of such an air battery is simple, and the amount of electrons released by the negative electrode magnesium is large. Therefore, according to Northeastern University, the advantage of this battery is that the battery energy density can reach 10 times that of lithium batteries of equal weight.
