Japan Seiko develops a new method for bearing components of wheel hubs

Seiko Co., Ltd. announced that it has developed a new method for manufacturing bearings for hub assemblies for passenger cars using high-strength materials and cold-rolling. Cold forging can increase strength compared to hot forging, but requires several times the forming pressure during processing. The company uses a "side extrusion method" that shapes large areas of the flange with less pressure to achieve forming at lower pressures.

The customer's requirements are getting higher and higher in terms of ensuring the reliability of strength and the like while achieving light weight. Cold rolling forming improves strength by improving the work hardening degree and surface finish compared to the previous hot forging. After the strength is increased, the disc flange can reduce the weight by 30% by changing the shape, etc., thereby reducing the overall hub assembly by more than 15%. However, cold rolling is more difficult to machine than hot forging. In view of the problem of an increase in forming pressure, the area of the forming portion is reduced by pressing the flange portion after pressing the shaft portion. Squeezing the shaft portion with a smaller area to form a larger flange portion. The area of pressure applied throughout the process has not changed.
