Japan JOGMEC has successfully developed a new technology for copper smelting
Japan's Oil & Gas and Metal Mineral Resources Agency (JOGMEC) has recently developed a new technology to add more sulfur to copper at low cost by adding sulphuric acid containing several kinds of bacteria to the ore with extremely low copper content. At present, large-scale empirical studies have begun on the outskirts of Kebiapo in northern Chile to achieve commercialization.
Copper is widely used in wires and circuits, etc., and demand in countries such as China and India, where the economy continues to grow rapidly, is rising. For Japan, where resources are scarce, it is imperative to develop technologies for exploiting low copper content veins. JOGMEC hopes to make it possible to redevelop the depleted domestic and foreign copper mines through new technologies. JOGMEC also hopes to apply the technology to extract rare metals from discarded mobile phones and computers.
The sulphidic copper smelting method was developed about 30 years ago and used for commerce, but JOGMEC related personnel said that the addition of new technologies that help to decompose ore to improve the efficiency of bacteria for refining is “epochologicalâ€, and the environmental impact has been used separately so far. Sulfuric acid is extracted in the same way.
JOGMEC has been conducting experiments in Otaru Town, Akita Prefecture since 2005. It has cultivated several types of bacteria naturally attached to ore, and succeeded in quickly extracting a large amount of copper by adding a large amount of sulfuric acid. JOGMEC hopes to conduct a large-scale experiment in Kebiapo in about 2 years to verify whether it can achieve the same effect and to explore the conditions that are most suitable for refining to realize commercialization at an early date.
