Biomass synthesis of dimethyl ether demonstration plant acceptance

New progress has been made in the development and application of a one-step process for the synthesis of dimethyl ether from biomass gasification in China: The Guangzhou Institute of Energy Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced last week that the Ministry of Science and Technology’s international science and technology cooperation project, Key Technologies for Biomass Gasification and Synthetic Fuels, The demonstration project passed the acceptance. The continuous and stable operation test of the pilot demonstration plant system showed that 6 to 7 tons of biomass feedstock can produce 1 ton of dimethyl ether product, the biomass composite gasification efficiency is ≥80%, and the dimethyl ether conversion per pass is ≥70%. Ether selectivity ≥ 90%.

The Guangzhou Energy Research Institute has completed the optimization design of the biomass gasification system and the gas purification system by introducing and digesting the advanced biomass oxygen enrichment technology in Italy, and built a pilot demonstration system for biomass gasification synthesis fuel. The project provided technical support for the implementation of biogas technology projects in China.

It is understood that the project was formally launched in 2008 and a pilot plant was completed in June 2009. During more than three years of research and development, Guangzhou Energy has relied on years of basic research results in oxygen-enriched biomass gasification technology, crude synthesis gas catalytic reforming and purification, and component modulation technology and devices, and bio-syngas gas. The innovative research on ether synthesis technology and catalysts was carried out and a 300 Nm3/h biomass oxygen-oxygen-reforming system was developed. The system has the functions of high-temperature inertial settlement, catalytic bed reformation and purification of tar and gas components, utilization of high-temperature gas waste heat, low-temperature filtration and high-efficiency dust removal after tar purification. Researchers also broke through the design concept of traditional catalysts for the synthesis of dimethyl ether, and developed a novel CuZnAl/AlOOH dual-function catalyst with uniform structure and composition.

According to reports, the biomass gasification synthesis of dimethyl ether fuel is an indirect liquefaction technology, which refers to the gasification of biomass through thermochemical methods to generate crude gas, and then to obtain high-quality synthesis gas through gas purification and component adjustment. A set of integrated technologies for synthesizing liquid fuels using catalytic synthesis technology is then used after supercharging. Because this technology has the characteristics of wide raw material adaptability, high product purity and cleanliness, and no NOx and SOx emission after combustion, it becomes an ideal chemical and transportation fuel production technology.
